Tips for Decluttering Your Rental Property

A woman sorts and puts clothes into donation boxes while decluttering her home. When clutter starts to pile up, removing it can be difficult. However, if your rental home is starting to overflow with clutter, you should address the issue right away. The more time you wait, the more clutter will accumulate, making decluttering even more challenging!

Rather than attempting to declutter your entire house or apartment at once, try splitting it down into smaller parts. Even if you have just 10 minutes each day, you may begin to clear away unsightly clutter gradually. This way, you can declutter your way toward having the tidy and organized home you desire.

Tackle One Room at a Time

One targeted approach to decluttering a rental home is to work on one room at a time. For instance, several professional organizers recommend picking one room in your house to completely clear of clutter. One technique is to designate separate bins or boxes for items that must be stored, donated, or discarded. After that, sort through and place each piece of clutter in one of the bins.

Anything that is not correctly placed should be discarded in the “put away” container while tossing out broken items. After that, empty each bin by storing the goods, tossing them away, or donating them to a local thrift shop. This lets you rapidly clear off counters, floors, and tabletops and immediately see visible improvement.

Keep it Short and Sweet

Another effective approach to decluttering is investing just a few minutes at a time decluttering one single space, like a drawer or cabinet. Utilizing this approach, you first give yourself a time limit, such as 10 minutes. After that, you go through the drawer or cabinet, pulling everything out. Throw away broken or expired items or donate things you haven’t used in the past year.

It’s always advisable to go through your pantry and medicine cabinet at least once a year and remove any expired or unused items. Be sure to properly dispose of expired medications, as they cannot simply be thrown in the garbage. Countertops are another trouble spot that can be quickly cleared of clutter in just a few minutes.

After you’ve cleared the space, organize and replace the stuff you’ve kept there. This is a wonderful time to create a system for that spice cabinet or group items in your pantry for more convenient access. Closets may be a more major chore that takes longer than 10 minutes, but the same systematic approach will also work on them. Just make sure to have plenty of boxes or bins handy to gather anything you no longer desire and put away clothing items as you go.

A Place for Everything

Keeping your rental home free of clutter is a lot easier if everything you own has a proper place. As we gather stuff, sometimes we accumulate items that don’t seem to belong anywhere in the house. But to keep clutter under control, locating a permanent home for your things and return them to their correct location after each use is important.

If you have too many things for the available space, it may be time to downsize or simplify. Think about donating unused items to a charity or thrift store. Otherwise, if weather permits, you could sell some of your extra stuff online or hold a garage sale. Store them carefully in clearly labeled plastic tubs or bins for anything you can’t bear to part with. In this manner, you can keep your things and your home clean and organized.
